Transportation

Like most cities that grew heavily after World War II, Fort Worth’s main mode of transportation is still the automobile, thanks to interstate highways 30, 20, 35W, and 820 (which all pass through or around the city). Interstate 820 is a spur of Interstate 20 and serves as a beltway for the city. Interstate 30 and Interstate 20 connect Fort Worth to Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Dallas. Interstate 35W connects Fort Worth with Hillsboro to the south and the cities of Denton and Gainesville to the north. State highways of note include Texas State Highway 114 (east/west), Texas State Highway 183 (east/west), and Texas State Highway 121 (north/south). Another option is the Chisholm Trail Parkway, a 27.6-mile toll road that opened in May 2014 after 50 years of planning and projection. Operated by the North Texas Tollway Authority in Tarrant and Johnson Counties, it extends from downtown Fort Worth south to Cleburne.

For public transportation, choose the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, better known as the Trinity Metro, which serves Fort Worth with dozens of different bus routes throughout the city (including a downtown bus circulator known as Molly the Trolley). Trinity Metro also partners with Dallas Area Rapid Transit to operate the Trinity Railway Express (developed in 2005), which offers commuter rail service from downtown Fort Worth to DFW Airport and downtown Dallas with several suburban stations between the two major cities. Additionally, two Amtrak routes stop at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center.

Open since Earth Day 2013, Fort Worth Bike Sharing, a city bike sharing and lending program, is another transportation option. With 350 bikes available for checkout, almost 50 stations are scattered throughout downtown, the Cultural District, TCU, and the Stockyards, among other city locations.

License to Drive

When you arrive in your new hometown, one of the first orders of business is getting your driver license updated.

New Texas residents can legally drive with a valid, unexpired driver license from another U.S. state, U.S. territory, Canadian province, or qualifying country for up to ninety days after moving to Texas. Prior to the end of the ninety-day grace period, a new Texas resident must apply for a Texas license in person at any driver license office to continue to drive legally. When applying for the new Texas license, you must surrender any unexpired driver license from another U.S. state, U.S. territory, or Canadian province (even if the picture on your old one was the best ever taken). With your valid, unexpired driver license from another U.S. state, U.S. territory, or Canadian province, you will not be required to take the knowledge or skills exams.

In addition, Texas has license issuance reciprocity with France, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan. Applicants who have a valid, unexpired driver license from one of these countries are not required to take the knowledge or skills exams if they surrender their out-of-country driver license. If you do not wish to surrender your out-of-country driver license, it’s test time: You will be required to take and pass all required exams.

Of special note, all applicants under eighteen must take the skills exam even if they hold a valid driver license from another state or country.
